HIPERWHEEL
Within the scope of a European consortium comprising representatives from the industrial and research fields, new methods for designing innovative wheelsets were developed and applied. In the Fraunhofer Institute LBF, data pertaining to design load was generated and fundamental examinations for the assessment of contact fatigue in wheelset axles were performed, in particular under operational loading conditions. The design of a demonstrator was accompanied by an experimental and theoretical stress analysis. After the construction of a prototype of a hybrid wheelset that is approx. 25% lighter than the series wheelset, final load programme tests were performed in the Fraunhofer LBF in a multi-axial wheelset test rig; these tests confirmed the feasibility of the method applied for designing wheelsets for rail vehicles that are subject to high loads. This allows the partially serious disadvantages of existing European standards to be overcome when introducing new wheelsets.
