ROBUST: Wear-resistant tool coatings for high-quality recycled plastics

Better finishes and less scrap

Recycled plastics make it difficult to manufacture high-quality plastic components due to impurities, inhomogeneities, and increased mold wear during injection molding. The ROBUST project is developing wear-resistant, optically textured mold coatings to improve surface quality and reduce scrap.

Challenges with Recycled Plastics

Recycled materials often exhibit inconsistent properties. Contaminants lead to visible surface defects and compromise process stability in injection molding.

Especially for visible parts - such as those in automotive interiors - even the smallest defects are unacceptable.

Textured and Wear-Resistant Tool Coatings

The project is developing coatings specifically designed for processing recycled materials:

  • increased wear resistance for abrasive materials
  • optical texturing to reduce surface defects
  • anti-adhesive properties for stable processes

Targeted surface design reduces the visibility of defects and ensures a uniform component appearance.

Impact on Surface Quality

The optical quality of plastic components depends heavily on the mold surface and process conditions.

Key Factors

The visual appearance (gloss, haze) of the components is primarily determined by four factors:

  • Micro- and nanotopography of the mold surface
  • Coating and surface chemistry
  • Material properties of recycled materials
  • Injection molding process control

Sustainability, Added Value, and Applications

The tool coatings developed make an important contribution to sustainable plastics processing:

  • less scrap due to fewer surface defects
  • lower resource and energy consumption
  • elimination of additional coating processes
  • longer tool life

Applications:

  • Visible parts in automotive interiors
  • consumer goods with high aesthetic requirements
  • technical plastic components
