Customized coating formulations: Effective protection for surfaces
Coatings are thin layers that are applied to surfaces to improve or change their properties. They are found in numerous applications, from industry and construction to consumer goods. The main objectives of coatings are to protect against environmental influences, improve aesthetics, and increase functionality.
A coating often makes it possible to use parts or machine components in their intended application. Paints and varnishes are among the most common coatings. They serve both decorative and protective functions against UV radiation, moisture, and corrosion. Varnishes are generally glossier and more resistant than paints. They are often used on wood, metal, and plastic to create a durable and easy-care surface.
In engineering, metal surfaces that are exposed to corrosive and abrasive stresses, especially at high temperatures, are protected with PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) hard coatings. Examples include extruder screws and injection molding tools in plastics processing.
Research activities at the LBF focus on customized developments for coating formulation components, such as binder resins, and on the characterization of coatings.
For the latter, we have a wide range of methods and options available to our customers.
We offer to use our expertise in chemical synthesis and characterization to carry out customized developments for your tasks in bilateral projects. We also welcome collaboration in publicly funded projects.
