LOLA - Noise-optimized logistics at the inland port

Quieter Port Management: A Better Quality of Life and More Efficient Logistics Processes

Industrial noise in inland ports leads to conflicts of use between industry and local residents, and growing cargo handling volumes make effective noise reduction measures increasingly important.

In the “Noise-Optimized Logistics in the LOLA Inland Port” project, we worked with our project partners to develop and implement solutions for noise reduction in the inland port. This resulted in concepts for active, semi-active, passive, and process-based measures, ranging from innovative vibroacoustic metamaterials (VAMM) to Active Noise Control (ANC).

Field Testing: Vibroacoustic metamaterials (VAMM) can efficiently reduce vibrations.

Concepts for active, semi-active, passive, and process-based measures

As part of the project, we led the development and field testing of the application demonstrators. Measures such as Bragg arrays for the targeted reduction of tonal noise, VAMM for vibration reduction, and Acoustic Black Holes were tested in the laboratory and at the port. Five use cases—ranging from bulk cargo to container handling—formed the basis for these practical tests. Logistical processes were analyzed and specifically optimized to minimize noise sources.

The results show: up to 6 dB less noise at critical locations and more efficient logistics processes.

The synergy between research, practical experience, and digitalization makes us a strong partner for quiet logistics processes. Customers benefit from solutions that can be flexibly adapted to different port locations and processes. A tool developed by Fraunhofer IML as part of the project visualizes the project results and illustrates the impact of the measures implemented.
