Patents on Innovative Additives

Use of an additive composition for the controlled accelerated decomposition of condesation polymers

Patent profile:

The invention relates to the use of a mixture consisting of at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyol, in particular one adlitol or cyclitol, and at least one organic phosphorus compound under protic conditions as an additive (hydrolysis catalyst) that catalyzes the hydrolysis of condensation polymers. Polymer composition, a process for accelerated decomposition and mouldings are claimed additionally.

Benefits for potential applications:

  • Dual-function behavior: stabilizes during melt processing (aprotic, low moisture), accelerates hydrolytic decomposition post-use (protic, e.g., water or humidity  exposure).
  • Tunable end-of-life: adjust polyol-to-phosphorus ratio to set decomposition rate without compromising processing.
  • Faster composting/biodegradation of biopolyesters (e.g., PLA, PBS, PBA); supports circular packaging, agricultural films, and hygiene products.
  • Cost-effective, scalable additives; compatible with standard extrusion and masterbatch routes.
